International Driving Permit

International Driving Permit

Only International Driving Permits (IDPs) issued under the Geneva Convention or Vienna Convention are accepted.

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows the holder to legally drive in countries that recognize the permit. To remain valid, the IDP must be accompanied by both
    – a valid driver’s license issued by the same country (the country of residence), and
    – a valid passport.
  • Please note that the IDP is merely a translation of your domestic driver’s license. You must carry both the IDP and your original driver’s license at all times while riding.
  • Since Korea is a signatory to the Geneva and Vienna Conventions, holders of valid IDPs issued by member countries are allowed to drive in Korea for up to one year from their date of entry (as stamped in their passport).
  • For motorcycle rentals in Korea, your IDP must meet the following conditions
    – It must have an A stamp (motorcycle endorsement).
    – It must have been issued within the past 12 months.
    – It must be in paper booklet format.
  • Important Notes
    – International Driving Licenses (IDLs) are not accepted.
