Driving Tips in Korea
■ Motorcycles Not Allowed on Expressways and Motor-Vehicle-Only Roads
- According to Korean traffic laws, motorcycles are not allowed to enter expressways or motor-vehicle-only roads. You’ll see signs at the entrances of these roads showing that motorcycles are prohibited, so please pay attention and follow the signs while riding. To plan your route safely, we recommend using Kakao Map or Naver Map — both apps offer motorcycle-specific navigation options.
■ Bus-Only Lanes
- Some lanes are designated for buses only. These are called bus-only lanes and are marked with blue lines on the road. During certain hours, only buses are allowed to use these lanes. Be careful not to drive in the far-left lane on major roads.
■ Unprotected Left Turns
In Korea, a green traffic light usually allows only going straight or turning right. However, at intersections with light traffic, unprotected left turns are allowed. This is called “비보호” (bi-bo-ho) in Korean.
It means you can turn left without a green arrow, but only when the light is green and only if it is safe with no oncoming traffic.
